“Do this and live,” was the promise.  “Don’t do this and die,” is the implication.  The outcome was death because no one – not Moses, not Aaron, not David, nor the prophets – could do it just right.  This was the covenant under which the Israelites lived.  Because God found fault with the people (Hebrews 8:8), and he didn’t want them to be dead to him, he promised that there would be a new covenant. 

Husband: “Don’t expect me to lift a finger to help you.”
 
Wife:  “You’re too much of an idiot to know how to help.”
 
Both:  “But were in it for the long haul, just like Jesus wants.”

She told us that the man with whom she was having an affair was much more Christ-like than her husband.  They prayed together and talked about God at their secret meeting place.  Seriously.  She would think about her husband’s lack of spiritual fervor, sense a greater interest in God in her illicit lover, and Satan was able to create one more excuse in her heart why what she was doing was not only OK, but right.
